What Is a Retort Pouch?
A retort pouch (also called retortable pouch, high-temperature sterilization pouch or flexible can) is a flexible laminated packaging bag that can withstand commercial sterilization temperatures of 121°C to 145°C under pressure for 20–90 minutes while maintaining seal integrity and barrier properties.
After the retort process (high-pressure, high-temperature steam sterilization), the food inside achieves commercial sterility (F₀ ≥ 3), meaning it can be stored at ambient temperature for 6–24 months without refrigeration or preservatives.
It is widely used for ready-to-eat meals, baby food, pet food, military MREs, outdoor camping food, soups, sauces, tuna, cooked rice, meat chunks, and medical/nutritional products.
